Iain and Hannah’s adventure to the capital

Making memories.

We started our Kiwifornia trip by getting our caffeine and hot chocolate fix in Cambridge village, before stopping along the Karapiro dam to enjoy the peace and view. We were immediately impressed with how smooth and comfortable the Volkswagen California was to drive, even through the city and narrow streets.

Once to Taupo we then had the long-haul along State Highway 5 across to Napier which was fairly uneventful and not all that scenic, until we were greeted with the views of the vineyards and orchards through Eskdale as we approached Napier. We parked-up for the night at the local holiday park which sits right against the beach. We enjoyed an evening of drinks and nibbles with local friends with the sun setting over the ocean. They also found the camper to be spacious considering it’s size, as well as being very comfortable and elegant. Our German neighbours from the site next door also came over to admire the California’s design.

The next morning was spent touring through Napier township  taking in the art deco architecture, Sunken Gardens and views out from the Marine Parade beach viewing platform. Great coffee was consumed in the picturesque Ahuriri village, before venturing up the super-narrow streets leading up Bluff Hill and taking-in the impressive view over the Napier Port.

From Napier we travelled through Hastings, down to Fielding and finally arriving in Wellington. We took a tour through Weta Workshop and thoroughly enjoyed their world of creativity before heading into the city for shopping, even more coffee and an Italian dinner on Cuba Street. We spent our last day relaxing by the beach at Eastbourne in The California before making the trip home via Taupo.

We were pleasantly surprised by how comfortable the California was, from driving within Wellington City to the open roads, to living and entertaining with friends and family, to restful sleeps by the ocean. The vehicle is so well though-out and designed, everything is catered for. There was never anything that was lacking or missing – instead we were constantly surprised with options. It’s luxurious and definitely gets noticed, even with some selfies taken by onlookers!

Hannah and I had a great time away, and we’re so thankful to Richard and everyone at Ebbett who gave us this opportunity to make some great memories.
