Coasting around the Coromandel

Rohans Family Trip

For our trip with the Kiwifornia we had always wanted to drive around the Coast of the Coromandel region. So we started our trip off between the Coromandel and Kaimai ranges at the Karangahake Gorge. We went for a short walk and then later that day stayed at the Kauaeranga valley camp in the Coromandel Forest Park.

We then did the coastal drive up to Coromandel and stopped at a few places like the square kauri tree, Waiau falls and a few beaches along the way.

Later on, in our trip, we drove North West heading towards Waikawau bay. The drive that day was so scenic, I could literally stop after every kilometre and be amazed by the view. The Waikawau bay is such a beautiful campsite, it’s got a lovely beach and the place is just beautiful in general.

The next day we drove back via the western coast and stopped over at Hot Water Beach and Waihi to have a look at the gold mine and beaches. Unfortunately, it was heavily raining that day, so we couldn’t do too much.

Most of the drive was through mountains and valleys with sharp turns and a lot of uphill driving. The amazing handling and good power and acceleration of the VW California made the drive so much easier (and more fun) than we expected.

The VW California has everything you need for a camping trip. I think it is the perfect vehicle for a road trip.
